When Nothing Seems to Work

There seems to be a million different self-help, self-improvement, and life-enhancement books and programs out there; and oftentimes, none of them seem to work. As long as people have talked about the power of positive thinking, there have been people who have said, “Bah-humbug! This doesn’t work!” Have you ever wondered what makes a cynical scrooge an expert on positive thinking?

Is there something you want? Do you have a dream that you would like to see come true? Do you have a prayer that you would like answered? Most people want something; though many don’t seem to know what that “something” is. Unfortunately, our “external” focus has most people thinking that “something” we are looking for is an actual “thing;” and most people spend most of their time looking to their outer world for guidance and behavioral cues — not pursuing their desires, but following “collective directives.”

Have you ever heard the old saying, “Be careful what you ask for…?” How about some of the more “biblical” sayings, like: “Declare a thing and it is so,” “Ask and you shall receive,” or “In the beginning, there was the word…” You could make a very long list of sayings and teachings from all ages, cultures, traditions, and regions, that all say essentially the same thing — Your word is your wand.

For every formed thing in this Universe, there is a “mental equivalent.” Mental Equivalents are simply the mental images, or mental versions, of our desires; they are the thoughts and images from which we build our desires — or with which we find our desires. For everything you wish to create for yourself, there is a mental equivalent. Have you built a mental equivalent for the thing you most desire?

The Secret has brought world-wide attention to the “Law of Attraction.” Millions and millions of people were dying to know “The Secret;” and many of them were amazed and pleased to learn about the creative power of their own thoughts. Some, however, were very disappointed and even angered and upset by some of the teachings in The Secret – calling them, “Materialistic, Narcissistic, Mean-spirited, Pie-in-the-sky, Wishful thinking, Un-spiritual,” and a long list of other judgments and criticisms. It seems some are looking for magic while others search for practicality; but, with The Law of Attraction, we find both.

So, What’s the Big Secret?

The Secret is such a phenomenal hit with the American public – and the world at large – not because it is such an amazingly powerful work of spiritual wisdom, but because most people are not content and are desperately seeking a miracle cure for what they themselves rightly consider to be “mundane” lives. People simply don’t spend their time and money on self-help books because their lives are so full of bliss they just don’t know what else to do other than help themselves; books like The Secret are so big because so many people want things to be different and simply don’t know how to do it.

Everyone loves a secret; that’s one of the things that made the book and DVD, “The Secret,” so popular. Everyone wants to know the “Secret.” People naturally want things to be better; and they want to know how to do that. That’s why “How-to,” and, “Self-Help” books are so popular. And if there’s a Secret that can do the trick for me, tell me the Secret!

Several months after writing The Belief Formula, I was visiting with my parents and we were speaking about the power to create what we want with our thoughts or prayers. I was telling them that there are no limitations to what a person can create with their imagination; if a human can imagine a thing, it is a possibility. If a human continues to imagine a thing, it becomes a certainty.

I began to give examples of things we take for granted, but were thought up, imagined, and created by humans who believed in something that did not yet exist in the physical world. The airplane existed as a mere fantasy for a very long time before gaining enough mass to become a physical reality. Once people could see it, and therefore believe in the new technology, advances in aircraft technology literally skyrocketed – no pun intended. Belief is the attractive force which brings together the very real, physical mass of our new realities.

As we spoke, my niece, Jessica, came into the room and listened for a few minutes before asking, “So, you mean I could pray for a car and get it?”
