Being ‘Storage-Wise’

We all have the habit of saving things up for the future. May it be money, property or even food? We might save them for a ‘rainy day’ or when you might actually need to use them. Most often than not due to our sheer ignorance we might not actually take the maximum use of what we store and sometimes it might not be useful at all. How and when we save as well as how actually make a lot of difference.

When it comes to food one of the easiest ways to store your food is in plastic boxes. You can use food grade plastic storage containers for long term food storage. This basically mean that there are some containers that will react with the food you store inside and may result in food poisoning or other health problems. Some other types of safe food grade storage containers are glass, buckets and liners. They all have their unique characteristics.

Basically not all plastic containers are made for storing every kind of food. Plastic containers come with certain categorizations or a grading system to make sure that customers know what type of containers can and cannot be used to store different kinds of food.
Unfortunately, many consumers are unaware of this and use the wrong kind of storage containers to store food. In this regard what you have to keep in mind is that the bottom says it all! When you buy a plastic container turn it upside down and look at the number inside the triangle symbol. It’s called the recycling symbol and the numbers inside it range from 1 to 7. Each number denotes the type pf plastic that is used to make the containers and once you know them you can make easy decisions regarding storage containers. It is generally accepted that numbers 1, 2, 4, 5 are the best type of plastic containers for food storage.

Other things you have to look out for at the bottom is whether it can be put in the microwave, refrigerator or dishwasher. They have respective symbols printed at the bottom. The image of a cup and a fork indicates that it can be used for food storage.

Before using any container for storage purposes we must keep in mind that we should first make sure that it is safe to use in the first place. The wrong kind of container will have adverse effects on your health. A little bit of research and effort on that part would not certainly go to waste. The health and safety of your family depends on you!
